A Mothers Fight:

The Luis Danvers Leukemia Fund was organized in honor of Luis Danvers a 6 year old boy who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. This organization will help Luis while he is battling this disease. It will also help serve as a catalyst to help find a way to cure as many people as we can with this disease.  Each year 1000's of people are diagnosed with leukemia.  It takes a toll on the patient and their families emotionally, financially, and mentally.  Luis's family has had to endure a huge loss.  It has been hard on us having lost my father, brother, and mother to cancer.  My mother was sick at the same time Luis was and died in December 2009.  When Luis was first diagnosed I didn't fully understand how grueling this situation would be.  It has taken over our lives.  In order to take care of Luis I had to leave work.  Then there are the issues that occur because of me trying to   keep up with Luis's chemotherapy schedule.   I have to ensure that he is well and keep him in environments that keep him free of infection.  What people take for granted like a  day at the park could potentially be a trip to the hospital because Luis was exposed to germs while playing.  There has been long term hospital stays, numerous trips to the emergency room, and just days where Luis is just out of it and you as a parent wish you could take his place.  Then there is all the missed parties and family events that you cannot attend because his counts are to low to be around people.  There is no such thing as normalcy now.  All I can do is be there for my son and turn a negative into a positive.  I am not trying to make my situation sound like it is the worst situation ever.  I am a strong woman that can handle this situation as well as help others in the process.  What I am trying to do is educate as many people as I can about Leukemia so that the next time you see a family with this disease you will understand what it is that they are going through and help them get through the process.
