I have leukemia but in no way does it dictate my life!

Hi my name is Luis and I have an interesting story to tell. I am a 7 year old boy who up until July 2009 was a healthy normal child. I loved life and enjoyed being around my family and friends. I like to dance, sing, play baseball, basketball and video games.  I was living life to the fullest and excited about starting school in the fall.  In summer of 2009, I became sick with a fever and achy bones. I was very fatigued and the doctors thought I had a virus.  By September 2009, I was diagnosed with Leukemia. The type of Leukemia that I have is Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (also known as Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL). The type of cell it affects is the Pre-B cell. Treatment for this type of cancer includes chemotherapy for 3 1/2 years and if this fails I would need a bone marrow transplant.  I am dealing with my situation the best way that I can with the help of my mother, my family, my friends, my school, and  even the help of perfect strangers.  I will not let this disease take over my life, instead I will use this as a way to help myself and others by making the world aware about Leukemia, my struggles with this disease, how it affects patients families, and the importance of becoming a bone marrow donor.

“20,012 swabs for 2012” Campaign to Raise Awareness

We are doing Bone Marrow Donor Drives for my son Luis nationwide as well as an online campaign to register 20,012 people to the bone marrow registry!!!!!

This is our new initiative that we launched for 2012 and it would be important for everyone to participate.

All you have to do is click on the red widget and register to become a bone marrow donor!

It is a must that you register through my website because the widget keeps a running tally of how many people swab for the campaign. The registration will be done through DKMS Americas. We want to see the number 20,012 on the widget by December 31, 2012.

Love,
From His Mom
Sharon

"The Match" (Bone Marrow Donor) By Fiona Harvey

The beautiful and talented Fiona Harvey did a video dedicated to all of us out there that are dedicated to finding that perfect match. She did an absolutely incredible job conveying the message that we have been preaching about "1 swab can save a life, 1000's of swabs can save a nation full of people....". Please look at this video and by all means help us with our new campaign

"20,012 swabs for 2012"
http://www.facebook.com/events/105247686275680/

This campaign was started because we realized that we need 1000's of people joining the registry in order for us to raise the statistics from a terrifying 1 out of 10 for minorities to at least a hopeful 5 out 0f 10. So please help us achieve this goal by asking everyone you know to go and click on the red widget and register to become a bone marrow donor. It is a must that you register through my website because the widget keeps a running tally of how many people swab for the campaign. The registration will be done through DKMS Americas. We want to see the number 20,012 on the widget by December 31, 2012. You can also get your own widget and at the end of the year we will tally up the numbers.

We are desperately looking for bone marrow matches for 4 patients Kelsie, Terria, Javeth, Marshe.  Please check out our faces of leukemia page for more info.  You can register below to become a bone marrow donor by clicking on this link.

Why Luis Danvers Leukemia Fund?

This page is dedicated to Luis Danvers. It was created by his mother Sharon Turnage to keep people informed about Leukemia, his treatments, hospital stays, fundraising activities done in honor of him, information on how to donate on his behalf, and informing the public on the importance of becoming a bone marrow donor.  We will also help other patients and their families with the services needed to help them through their ordeal.  The goal is to help every patient become healthy again.

Luis Danvers is a 7 year old boy who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in September 2009. This page is dedicated to him. Please check this website on a regular basis.  I have made it my mission to help educate the public about this disease.  We will hold events and fundraisers to help my son Luis as well as the many other patients battling Leukemia.  The goal is to turn a negative situation into a positive one.  If we could help the lives of so many others that are suffering from leukemia then this ordeal would be worth it.  Please pray for us and keep spreading the word about our plight.

        Love always from his mom,

What you can do in your Community?

Leukemia is a devastating illness that can affect anyone at anytime. This year alone approximately 5000 children will be diagnosed with leukemia.  It can be life changing for the patient and their families.  These families like myself need your help.

There are many different ways that you can help Luis and other families deal with the crisis of leukemia in this country.  There are so many ways you can help us win the fight against leukemia.

Contact Us

If you want more information on the services that we provide, events taking place on Luis's behalf, how to donate, or for any other reason you can contact the Luis Danvers Leukemia Fund.  You can do this by filling out the "Contact us here" box on the contact us page.   Someone will contact you at their earliest convenience.

Participate In Our events

We will be hosting several events to bring to light the crisis of leukemia in our communities.  These events will allow you to see the enormity of the situation that we as families face when we are given this diagnosis.  Please get in touch with someone in this organization for more information.  by participating in the events, you will do your part in helping us socialize and familiarize the American people with the plight of leukemia and other childhood illnesses.

 Volunteer In Your Community

There are many organizations that help families with a patient that was given a diagnosis of leukemia.  Contact us for a list of organizations that you can do volunteer work for.  Whether it is cooking meals for patients, or assisting with hospital bedside assistance, or even babysitting for a parent that has to be in the hospital, there are many ways that you can help.

 Spread The Word

Help us spread the word about Luis and his fight against cancer.  We want to let the world know that he is winning the fight of his life. By helping us spread the word about his story, he will be a catalyst to bring about change.

Be The Match - Search For Your HLA Type

Why is searching the registry right now so important!

It is so important for patients to know as soon as they are diagnosed, if there is a match for them on the registry.  The reason why is that if there is no match it will give you time to look for one.  You will be able to have time to do drives to register people so that a match will be available to you.  Too many times people wait months, sometimes years until a doctor says that the patient needs a match. Then when they search the registry there is no match available.  Lets get proactive and start making sure that every patient has a match before time goes by and it is too late.
